Treadmill 5.5 mi @ 7:57 mtd 39
Decent run on the treadmill. I'm finding that every time I get on the treadmill, I want to keep the miles down and do a tempo run. I was planning on an medium effort 10 miles, but ended up pushing it a bit and doing shorter miles. Felt good though.
The winter/spring race plan is just about set. In registered for....
1/1/12 Lowell New Years 10k
2/26/12 Hyannis Marathon
3/19/12 New Bedford half Marathon
4/16/12 Boston Marathon
and possibly the old fashioned 10 miler in February.
So looks like I'll be focusing more on roads than trails this winter....
I guess I'm a Runner Now

Soup Group - 7 miles @ 8:30 mtd 33.5
Ran with the soup group today. We had another record turnout with about 23 people showing up. The run was at the hopedale parklands in memory of the passing away of Larry Olsen.
The run was fine. I had a little bit of tendon wonkiness going on behind my left knee, so I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Trails at Callahan - 10 miles - 1 hour 45 min (10:30/mi) - mtd 14.5
Today was supposed to be a day off for me, but I got a text from Dan Davin this morning asking if I wanted to run. I haven't run with Dan in like 6 months (he's been sort of locked in on swimming), so couldn't pass it up. Then he said he was up for trails, and it became a no-brainer! Dan is faster than most of the people I run with (me included!) so we did a good brisk, but not painful 10 mile loop at Callahan.
We had absolutely GORGEOUS weather. (still running in shorts in a tech shirt in December, so no complaints!
Friday December 2nd, 2011 - Good News!!!! (i think..)
I'm running the Boston Marathon again in 2012!!!
I got the official word last night at my club's monthly meeting that one of the club's 8 Boston numbers is going to me! I didn't think I'd be doing Boston again for two reasons. First and most importantly, I didn't know if I'd be able to get a number. I missed out on the opportunity to run for the Alzheimer's Association again this year because I missed the application deadline. The only other possibility was running with a club number. The club usually gets 10 numbers a year from the BAA, but this year they only got 8. A bunch of club members put in their names for those numbers. The choices are made based on club involvement over the past year and somehow I ended up #1 on the list! It looks like another winter of cold snowy Saturday morning long runs for this guy.....

Treadmill - "speedwork" 4.5 miles - 34 minutes (7:33 pace) - MTD 4.5
I wasn't really sure what my workout was going to be today. I just knew that I wanted to stay off of the roads because yesterday's 11.5 mile road run left me a bit sore. (an unfortunate side effect of "coddling" myself on the trails for the last few months!) Started with an easy 1 mile warmup, and then cranked the speed up to 8.3mph (7:20 pace). Felt good after a mile so I bumped it up to 7:10 pace for a mile and then 7:00 for a third mile. Finished off with a 1/2 mile cool down at 7.5mph. It was great to do something speedy for a change! I'd like to make this type of workout a once a week thing.

Here come the Jitters!
Two weeks from right now, if you're looking for me, I should be somewhere on 135 in Natick!
As the marathon draws near, and my mileage tapers down, I'm finding myself with too much time to think about the race. As with all things in my life, when I have too much time to think is when I start to have problems. Am I ready? I think so, but my last two long runs haven't left me feeling very confident.
This week I took thursday, friday and saturday off, which is very unlike me. On thursday I decided to skip my run. I figured that since I wasn't planning on doing my long run until sunday, I could run a short run on friday which is normally my day off. What I forgot though, was that Kate was going out to dinner with some friends on friday and would be anxiously waiting for me to get home from my shoot so she could drive up to Nashua. So no run thursday or friday.
On saturday, my running club had it's annual race, the Boston Tune Up 15k.
Instead of running this one I decided to volunteer at the race. It was actually pretty fun. I worked a water stop with Hiroshi and Dan. I entertained brief thoughts of doing a short easy run saturday afternoon, but decided that there was nothing to gain.
So on Sunday I did my long run for the week with the Soup Group.
A couple of the guys were planning 11, Dan's plan called for 12, and Hiroshi and I were looking for 15. I was a beautiful course winding through medway and I believe touching parts of hopkinton. The only problem was that it was really windy! I ended up doing 15.25 miles, but it felt as tough as any of the 20+ milers that I've done yet!
The powers that be just don't want me to feel ready for this race! I really thought that after three days off, and a shorter distance of 15 miles, I would feel awesome and confident afterwards. Nope. I spent most of the day yesterday with sore legs muscles, knees and ankles. WTF!!
Too much thinking!

A New Discovery
Today I ran after shooting at America's Test Kitchen. Being hesitant to run on the city streets, (mostly because I don't know where I'm going), I headed over to the reservoir that I've seen driving in so many times on route 9. I've run there a few times now and, to be honest, don't really enjoy it that much. It's just shy of a mile around which is good, but its packed stone dust, and isn't anywhere near level any more.
As a result there are tons of dips and rises and it gets pretty hard on the calves and ankles.
After 3 loops, I decided to get off of the path and onto the road. I had done 2.7, and my plan was to do about 5. (I AM supposed to be tapering after all!) Anyway, off onto the road I went with no real direction.
After going down a hilly road in a VERY nice neigborhood (one house I saw had to be at least a 3 or 4 million dollar mansion with a security checkpoint under construction), I ended up at another reservoir that I hadn't known about. This one had a paved path! After asking a couple of other runners I found out that this loop was 1.5 miles which would put me just over my planned distance of 5 miles once I got back to the car, so I went for it.
I'm pretty sure this new reservoir was actually Jamaica Pond. It was actually quite nice to run around. It has a lot more traffic that the first reservoir which I have discovered is Brookline Reservoir. I'm sure as the weather continues to get better, there will be more and more people, but for now it's pretty cool.
In the future, I'm just going to leave my car at ATK and head straight over to Jamaica Pond instead.
In fact, I'm pretty sure Jamaica Pond links up with another pond and path so the loop might extend past 2 miles. I'll have to scout it out on a future run.
After finishing the loop, I tried to improvise and find my way back to the car without following the same route I took away from it. This proved a bit difficult and I got lost for a little bit. No biggie though. My 5.5 mile run turned into a 7 miler which was just fine by me.
Side note, this run put me over 180 miles for the month which I think is a first. It also put me over 500 miles for the year so far!
